“Raw Emotion In An Era Of Emoticons”
My work is very much about the raw beauty in life; The expected and the unexpected colliding to create new storylines. I’m drawn to the combination of imagery – both found and created – and the gesture of paint that exists alongside -- and because of -- this imagery. Each piece has a unique, personal history to it. Informed emotionally by places I’ve lived and worked. People I’ve loved and lost. And yes, all while processing the everyday barrage of information we are all subjected to in this digital age. I find that when others view my work, they also draw on their own experiences - and thereby create their own unique interpretations. Having lived and worked in Chicago, New York City, Detroit and now Texas, I find I have a rich backlog of information and emotion surging forth. I choose to paint mostly in acrylics these days, mainly because of the expediency of the medium, but I will utilize oil, roofing tar, bleach, spray paint and enamel as well as charcoal. Typically, I will have two-to-six pieces in process at any given time. This allows me the freedom to fail more than once, to discover new things on simultaneous levels, and of course, to raise my win-to-kill ratio.

American photographer, Irene Kijak was influenced at a young age by her picturesque surroundings growing up in the rolling hills of the Midwest. Inspired by photo journalism, she received her training in portraiture, wedding, product, and fine art imagery. Irene’s vision has always been to capture her subjects in a light all of their own. The current work follows feng shui principles that floral representation should be exhibited in the home at all times. Irene combines her digital curiosity to emphasize evolutionary transformations in flowers and all forms of organic plant life. These studies in vibrant colors reveal a thought process that continually explores the boundaries between nature and fine art. Her integrity as a professional photographer and her insightful nature bring out the beauty and magic in all of her subjects.

In 2003, I was diagnosed with CROHN’S DISEASE, an incurable autoimmune disease of the intestinal tract. The eight years that ensued were mentally, and physically, the hardest years of my life. Chronic debilitating pain, confined solitude, hospital stays, doctor visits, blood transfusions and undergoing major intestinal surgeries became my norm, all while trying to care for my children. The physical and mental suffering I endured was often unbearable. I felt trapped in a living nightmare, and an exhausting mental battle between the will to live and the desire to die. Then, in 2008, out of absolute desperation, I had my large intestine removed, leaving me with a permanent ileostomy. The operation was a last resort, and thankfully successful, leaving me pain and symptom free. I was blessed with a new lease on life and was grateful to be alive, but was now dealing with a sea of powerful emotions that needed to be processed. Driven by an unexplainable force, I started creating a personal visual diary, allowing myself to speak through creative self-portraiture. Through this deeply therapeutic self-expression, I was able to let go of insecurity, low self-esteem, anger, sadness, vulnerability and express gratitude and happiness, among many other emotions. I was also able to lose myself in fantasy and create a world where I felt safe, strong, secure and confident in my body image. It is true that one never knows how strong they really are, until being strong is the only choice they have. The pain of my journey was enlightening. I have grown tremendously as a person, and artist because of it. I sincerely hope this collection of my work leaves you feeling inspired and moved in some way.
